Bungus
Bungus
is situated about 150 km away from Srinagar, in the district Kupwara at an
altitude of 10,000 feet above sea level. Spread over an area of 125 sqkm,
Bungus is shaped like an uneven sphere. “Bun” means forest in Sanskrit and
“Gus” means grass. So Bungus means
forests filled with grass. There are
many meadows full of luxuriant, green and velvety soft grass in Bungus. The
Gujjars or shepherds, who are believed to have discovered this amazing
destination, bring their sheep and cattle for grazing here as the grass is not
just extra soft but is also nutritious and contains medicinal qualities. There
are many streams and springs flowing merrily in Bungus, which is surrounded by
Shamshabari glaciers. The summers are very cool and the temperature is below
zero degree in the winter months. There are plans to start a helicopter
facility for tourists intending to visit this exotic destination.
Lolab Valley
Charismatic
Lolab valley reminds one of Scotland. The fine orchards, attractive rice fields
and lush green meadows make it one of the most enchanting valleys of Kashmir.
Joshua Duke remarks, “There are few more charming spots in Kashmir than the
Lolab. If it lacks the wild grandeur of Sind or the majestic splendor of the
Gurez or the calm expanse of the Dal and the Manasbal, it has a sylvan beauty
all its own and nowhere excelled.” The valley is profusely covered with thick
forests of deodar. The very fertile oval shaped Lolab valley is situated in the
north east of Srinagar in the district of Kupwara.
