Seasons

The valley is about 5000 feet above sea level but is not as cold as it should be at such an altitude. The reason is the surrounding hills which save the valley from the intense cold wave of the north and sweltering airstreams of the south. The Americans will feel the chill of Canada in Kashmir and find the warmth of Northern Mexico or the vitality of San Francisco and moderation of Los Angeles in the climate. Dr. Neve, who was a surgeon in Kashmir medical mission, wrote that “climate of Kashmir suits Europeans.” The variety of climate which can be obtained in whole of Europe from shores of Mediterranean to North Cape is enjoyed by tourists in one place -Kashmir. Due to varying altitudes, the climate of Kashmir is dissimilar at different parts.

 March to May: Romantic Spring

These three months are quite pleasant, cold and windy with occasional showers. The sight of blossoms of colorful flowers and their pleasant aroma creates a magical effect. Cotton clothing and occasionally light woolens are preferred.                                                               June to Aug: Bright Summer

Srinagar is warm, while popular resorts like Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg are pleasant. The climate is colder at places of higher altitudes. Cotton clothing in Srinagar and light woolens in the evenings at places of higher altitudes are required.

 Sept to November: Artistic Autumn

The climate becomes pleasant in Srinagar from mid-September onwards. The weather in autumn, especially in October-November is fairly cool and clear. With chinar leaves turning passionate red, the setting becomes awesome. Saffron flowers bloom in this season and portray a brilliant spectacle. Light woolens during day and heavy woolens during night are needed.

 Dec to Feb:  Celestial Winter

The snow flakes arrive and slowly paint the valley with mystical white turning it into a fairyland.     The weather is extremely cold and heavy woolens are a necessity. The Kashmiris cuddle their dearest Kangris (mobile heaters) for warmth.
